If you're a pilot looking for a fun and unique day trip with your friends or family, look no further! Recently, I had the opportunity to fly N257TL from Hayward Executive Airport (KHWD) to San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (KSBP) and spend the day ATV riding in the Oceano dunes.
The flight from KHWD to KSBP was a beautiful one, with clear skies and great visibility. The Cirrus SR20 is a pleasure to fly, with its advanced avionics and comfortable cabin.
Once we landed at KSBP, we took a 15-minute Uber ride to Oceano, where we rented ATVs and spent the afternoon riding in the dunes. It was a blast! The dunes are vast and offer a variety of terrain, so there's something for everyone, whether you're a beginner or more experienced rider.
When it comes to lunch, there are a few great local options to check out. For a casual quick lunch near the beach, Pier St Deli is a great choice. They have a variety of sandwiches, soups, and salads made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. If you're in the mood for Mexican food, Old Juan's Cantina is a must-try. A five minute walk from the beach, they have a wide selection of tacos, burritos, and other Mexican specialties, as well as a full bar.
One tip I have for those considering a similar trip is to keep in mind that while Oceano County Airport (L52) is at a walking distance to the dunes and the beach, it can often have IFR conditions, whereas KSBP is more likely to be VFR. If you're planning to fly VFR, KSBP is a better option. In addition, many reported in the Foreflight comment section for L52 that it was known for having the taxiway centerline too close to parked planes creating a risk of ground collision.
Overall, this was a fantastic day trip that I'd highly recommend to any pilot looking for a fun and unique adventure. If you're interested in flying N257TL, you can rent this aircraft and make your own day trip dreams a reality!
